C sar Franck's ever popular Violin Sonata exists in many different versions, including one for cello and this one for flute. None of these arrangements seems to stem from the composer himself, but that doesn't matter, since the music holds up very well regardless of the instrumental vehicle. What makes this disc so spectacular Galway's bright, immaculate performances aside--is the presence of Martha Argerich, arguably the world's greatest living pianist and something of a specialist in this very sonata as well as in the music of Prokofiev. With the Reinecke sonata thrown in as a bonus, the result is a great chamber-music recording all around and not just another flute disc
